In 1981, Da’Vella purchased the remains of an old Catholic Church in Hokitika and began what turned into a lifelong passion, reclaiming historic consecrated structures and incorporating them into new buildings such as the Chapel by the Lake and the Blessed House. Some years later, Wayne moved back to Lake Hayes with his wife, Suzanne, and a dream to create a unique, medieval-inspired boutique lodge – and so the family made their first foray into the boutique hospitality industry.
Within a few short years, the magnificent, architecturally-unique Stoneridge Lodge was completed, with its three suites and separate Honeymoon Cottage. With the addition of the Hayes Room shortly afterwards, Wayne and Suzanne secured Stoneridge’s reputation as one of Queenstown’s most stunning wedding venues, with couples travelling from around the world to exchange vows in this truly unique setting.
Buildings crafted from recycled timbers and stone, bespoke hand-forged ironwork and giant hardwood beams give Stoneridge its distinctive, authentic character and rustic charm. The property is home to magnificent sprawling gardens, tranquil water features, sculptures and a boutique vineyard, which all represent decades of dedicated and inspired work.
The family’s most recent venture has been the brand-new luxury lodge, Stoneridge Retreat; perched high on the hill behind Stoneridge Lodge with six sumptuous suites, indulgent facilities and spectacular outlook over the lake and mountains.
